Welcome to Excel Sports Clinic, we are an established Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy clinic based in York. The clinic was set up in 2010 by Tom Robinson and was based from Fitness First gym. In 2012 Adi Hammond joined the clinic and in 2016 we moved to our first bespoke Rehab and Performance Centre in Clifton Moor. At the end of 2021 we acquired our new premises on Clifton Moor which we’ve fitted out to the highest standard with 5 consultation rooms, fully equipped strength and conditioning gym and a comfortable reception and waiting area.
All staff have degrees in Sports Therapy or Physiotherapy and are members of the Society of Sports Therapists or The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. Our staff have previously worked full time in professional sport and we use this experience to bring the best available service to our patients and clients. I have a BSc (Hons) in Sports Therapy and I specialise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal injuries. I have practiced sports therapy since graduating in 2008 and have treated individuals from a variety of backgrounds ranging from professional sports people to casual runners.
I set up Excel Sports Clinic in 2010 to bring a quality service to the people of York and the surrounding area. My approach is to use evidence based techniques and strategies in order to help you recover in the most effective way possible. A large part of what we do is helping people improve their strength and mobility and we do our best to educate patients and build their confidence so they can better self manage themselves in the future and as such it means I can treat not only sporting injuries but a variety of other musculoskeletal problems as well.
Alongside my work in the clinic, I have previously lecturered at York St John University where I specialised in Sports Injury Rehab. I also previously taught on the Sports Therapy degree at York College.
From 2008 to 2016 I was employed by York City Football Club as a Sports Therapist. In 2012 I took on the role of Head of Academy Sports Science and Medicine where I was responsible for the entire provision of Sports Science and Medicine for all age ranges from U9 to U18 within the Academy at York City FC.
I have always participated in a variety of sports and have a particular passion for trail running, football and squash. I am also a terrible golfer!
Adi Hammond
I have worked alongside Tom at Excel Sports Clinic since June 2012. I have a first class honours degree in Sports Therapy from York St John University. I also hold qualifications in taping and strapping, kinesio taping and sports massage. Since graduating I have worked at the clinic whilst also lecturing part-time at York College for three years on BTEC Sport and Exercise Science and Level 3 Sports Massage for adult learners.
As well as this I worked for York City Football Club for five years; I started off as a part-time Sports Therapist covering all academy games and training for U8s-16s providing pitch-side first aid and diagnosis and treatment of injuries. I then progressed to a full time role, becoming U18s Head Sports Therapist; this allowed me to deal with players on a daily basis in a professional setting. After my U18 role I gained promotion to First team Fitness & Rehab Coach; this involved me running all strength and conditioning sessions for players, setting individual gym/diet plans for players and running fitness testing and pre-season conditioning with the professional athletes, whilst also rehabilitating players back from early stage injuries.
Having practiced Sports Therapy in both a professional football environment and in a private clinical setting allows me to work with a multitude of different people. This enables me to target both ends of the spectrum in terms of working with elite athletes who need conditioning for professional sport to those of the general public who need rehabilitation to be able to complete simple daily tasks. I have been exposed to a range of scenarios and approaches that have moulded my clinical and applied work.
My key interests and hobbies are football and running; I also like to play golf and I am keen to lower my handicap. Other interests include walking, cycling and playing badminton when I get the opportunity.
Charlotte Stamp
I have a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Physiotherapy from York St John University and a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Leeds Beckett University. I also hold a sports massage qualification.
Throughout university I have helped people of all ages and abilities to achieve their goals both in and out of sport. I am passionate about getting people back to their best and I utilise a range of skills such as specific exercise prescription and manual therapy to do so.
Outside of work you will most likely find me running around an athletics track or strength training in the gym. Throughout my years of being surrounded by athletes and competing at a high level myself, I have become enthusiastic about injury prevention and maximising performance.
Emily Cooper
Originally from Ripon, I have been in York for 3 years completing my BSc Sport and Exercise Therapy degree. Whilst finishing my degree I have been practicing sport massage allowing me to build experience working with a large variety of people from sporting and non-sporting backgrounds. Since completing my degree I have worked as a Sport Therapist for a rugby team, as well as working in clinic. I have been able to help athletes from many sports, such as ultra-marathon runners, footballers, bodybuilders and semi-professional rugby players. Having worked with a rugby team for many seasons, and have had the chance to assess and rehabilitate a wide range of injuries on and off the pitch, using manual therapy and exercise based techniques. My approach is to work together on creating the best individualised
rehabilitation plan for you to achieve your goals. I have been lucky enough to work with the Cook Islands Women’s Rugby league team during the 2021 Rugby League World Cup, providing pre and post-game massage and manual therapy to help them during their tournament.
Having worked with a wide range of athletes from different sports during my time at university, I have helped many get back to the sport or exercise they love in the most efficient way for them, restoring functionality and movement most suited to their goals. I have additional qualifications in sport massage, Rock-taping, first aid for sport and exercise and fitness instructing which all contribute towards providing the best rehab, or prehab, possible for you.
I have been involved in sport all my life, including playing rugby for many years and in my spare time you will find me in the gym or practicing yoga as well as enjoying the countryside, my favourite place to be!
I've seen Tom a number of times over the years for various sporting injuries and can highly recommend him. On every occasion he has been professional, thorough and has quickly and correctly identified the issue. He is always friendly, has a positive, can do attitude, and will do everything he can to get you back to full fitness as quickly as possible.
I've had Adi helping me with my ACL tear for a few months now. He is professional, knowledgeable, and goes the extra mile to look after his clients. Facilities are smart and clean and plenty of parking.
When our daughter came down with a knee injury that she couldn’t shake for months, friends from her JPL team recommended Adi.
We took her along and Adi identified the issue (actually quad and hamstring rather than knee) and gave her exercises to strengthen them. Within a few weeks she was back playing at full strength.
We’ll certainly be going back if anything else crops up through the season!
We started to visit Adi after recommendation from a friend.
After listening to my younger son explain his pain Adi did a full assessment and explained what he needed to do.
He made a great recovery.
I then brought my older son after a football injury and yet again we were very impressed with the help and guidance he gave us.
I shall be recommending you to others.
Charlotte was exceptional in helping my dad who has been struggling with mobility in his legs for over a year. Unfortunately a GP diagnosis of bursitis with little action to help ease his pain has resulted in a year long issue with my dad being limited in his walking ability with a lot of pain. It was looking like a long term problem that was putting my parent’s life on hold. After meeting Charlotte and hearing about how she can help her clients with mobility and ease of joint pain, and hearing her enthusiasm and devotion to her work and the qualifications she has achieved, I recommended my dad make an appointment to see her with the feeling there was ‘nothing to lose’ but with the belief the she could help. I was not wrong. Both my mum and were very impressed by the advice and help Charlotte gave and her commitment to her work, along with her qualifications.
My dad having a heart problem, currently waiting for a heart operation, is significantly hampered in his ability to exert himself, but has reported that in just three weeks the exercises Charlotte gave him have significantly reduced the pain he has in his legs, now having the mobility to climb stairs which he had struggled to do. My mum is benefitting from doing these exercises also, with both my mum and dad motivating each other to continue with them daily. I would highly recommend Charlotte and the Excel Sports Clinic to anyone needing to improve mobility and increase their performance. Charlotte is lovely lady who is easy to get on with, is very enthusiastic and motivated in her work, and is clearly passionate about helping people. Thank you very much.
